In this lecture Jonathan Tucker will provide an insight into the origins and evolution of the Silk Road. He uses images, traveller’s anecdotes and a wealth of literary and historical sources to celebrate the cultural heritage of the countries that lie along the Silk Road and illuminate the lives of those who once travelled through the very heart of the world.
Jonathan devoted many years to exploring the ancient trade routes between the former Chinese capital of Changan (modern Xian), and the Roman capital of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul). With the exception of Iraq, he has travelled the entire length of the Silk Road. These journeys were made to research and write a comprehensive history of the Silk Road, but they also had a secondary purpose – to see what remained of the towns and historical sites along the legendary old road and to record it before it is lost forever.
He has written five books including three on the Silk Road, plus an illustrated Silk Road map.
